Hathorn Hall - MS State University

This post is about 4 months late, but I still wanted to share my daughters living arrangements this year.  Another year in a dorm, but this is a soriety dorm.  Her hall is all Delta Gamma Girls.  Kinda the same set up as last year, but having her friends on the same hall has made it a lot of fun!  The soriety girls moved in over week earlier than everyone else, because they  had to prepare for rush.  Someone really did not think this out well.  Move in was at 3pm for the entire dorm to move in.....all 5 floors.  Guess what floor we had to move stuff to?  Yes, floor 5!  Thank goodness for the volunteers, about 4 of them hit the stairs with their arms full.  We took the elevator with full arms and someone still had to make another trip down.

She had about 1 hour to help and then she had to be back at the Soriety house for a meeting......That is all I have to say about that.  Basically, I did everything, but she didn't want me to hang any pictures...Get the picture?  LOL!  This is why the post is so LATE!

Sorry....I didn't take a picture of the whole room.  But we turned the beds, so the girls could sit and lean against the wall. The chest and Refrigerator are between the beds.  We raised her bed almost the maximum height and used a sheet for a bed shirt.  She can hide lots of stuff under there.  She has one of those 3 drawer plastic storage containers for snacks, first aid, medicine, and etc under the bed and out the way....and who knows what else.  Last year, both girls had the same bedding, but a new roommate this year.  The new roommate has grey bedding and used pops of coral and blue, so it works!

This is how I left it......

I did arrange some things on her desk and got the pictures out....Who knows how long it stayed just like this.  The first couple of weeks for the soriety girls is crazy and exhausting.

Room layout
The TV is set in one the upper cabinets and then the cords are snaked down.  The other mom was going to take care of getting cords attached and hooked up to the cable.

She wanted more pillows for the bed....I wonder how often it really gets made up and looks cute with the pillows, but moms usually try to please.  We couldn't find anything that we really liked, so I made some.  I am not a seamstress!  My mom is, but I never could get the hang of it.  I could cut out my own patterns for purses, but couldn't make those sew today and wear tomorrow patterns for dresses....LOL!  She needed some more color, besides, blue and corral.  She had a few yellow accessories, so we added yellow in pillows.
Delta Gamma's symbol is an Anchor

I think I did pretty good!  I printed an Anchor off the internet for a pattern.  I used the two sides fusible stuff to iron it onto the fabic and then used embroidery thread around the edges and for the rope.  I even put cording around the outside.

A small one with a painted on anchor.

SO, I finally got a picture of those pillows on the bed and some pictures hung.  She was suppose....to hang her picture board at the head of her bed, guess it is hiding underneath.

 CUTE!

For those of you getting ready to move into a dorm....I hope this post may help you.

THE Dorm Room - Critz Hall - MSU

College move in...finally arrived!  We left home at 5am to head to Mississippi State at Starkville, MS.  Check in started at 8:30am.  We wanted to be there and try to beat some of the crowd and rain.

Her truck was full of clothes and golf clubs.  My car was full of this and more.......

The college had over 500 volunteers to help with the move in process.  First, you had to go to a check in point to get your dorm key, and then get in line to your dorm.  We didn't really have a line.  We pulled right up in front of the dorm. There were dollies and volunteers to help you to unpack your vehicle.  Once, you had everything out, you moved your vehicle to a parking spot. We parked right there in front of the dorm.  As the day went on, parking got more difficult.  The volunteers even helped to get your things to your dorm.  Everything had her dorm room number posted on it.  I sure those on the second and third floors, REALLY appreciated the help.

Her new home for this school year, Critz Hall.  This is one of the old dorms. Many have been replaced with new dorms.  The key to getting into one of those....This IS IMPORTANT, Apply for college the very first MINUTE that the books open, which is at midnight.  You will have to look up the date.  She and her roommate had a combined application date of something like the 15th and that wasn't good enough. Or, be in the Honors College.  Brianna is smart enough, but didn't want the extra pressure.

Of course, I didn't get a before picture of the Room....but it would put tears in your eyes....thinking about leaving your baby there.  No bathroom in these rooms, you have to hike 3 doors down the hallway. I think there are 4 toilets in one room and 4 showers in another, for about 36 girls to share......

Here is the floor plan.  Neither of the girls wanted to bunk their beds and I don't blame them.  Having them side by side does take up ALL the floor space, but allows for a ton of storage under the bed.

A room full!  Her Roommate brought the yellow curtains....They looked great while they were up!  We had to use command strips for everything, nails are not allowed and the outside wall is concrete anyway.  So, Katie's dad is working on a plan.

Someone had to take a food break!

She is working on her Photo board.  The B frame was made for her, by her sister Megan, one year for Christmas.  It looks great with some dangle earrings.

You saw the Initials in an earlier post.  They look Cute!

If, she is studying at her desk on the Right, her roommate can't get in or leave without her moving.  It is tight!

The Corral picture frame on the top shelf, was just an old wood one that I painted to match her colors. The Yellow basket use to be green.  Spray paint is a wonderful thing.  The Yellow thing down on the desk holding Finger nail polish, is actually a Pool Ball holder that was spray painted Bright Yellow.

Welcome to Bulldog country!

The thing hanging on the towel rack, we found at Bed Bath & Beyond, it is designed to hold hot irons, instead of leaving them on the vanity till they cool down.

Katie's dad made this to hold jewelry, she painted it.
The Family
I think that their room has to be one of cutest!

Getting Dorm Ready!

Wow, this summer break has flown by and dorm move in for Brianna is Aug 10th....Yikes, we will be officially empty nesters.  For the last two months, we have been dorm shopping & doing projects for the room.....and boy do the $$ mount up.

Her comforter is Turquoise and White.  She wanted to add a touch of Yellow & Coral to the room.  Two of the projects, a photo board (I have already done an article on that one) and her Initials.

Now the letter project.  We went to Hobby Lobby and found some wood letters, the D being bigger for our last name.  And, we painted.  The yellow letters got many coats, the wood just kept sucking it up.....

Then she decided she wanted to D have Chevron.  Again Googled for a Pattern.

This was tedious!

In the middle of the night, I got to thinking that the letters (yellow ones) would just have no pop against those blah dorm colored walls and she was wanting some coral accents.  I had some free canvas in my closet that I could paint coral and then put the Letters on it.

We had looked for a Coral at Hobby Lobby and then didn't have one.  I don't know how to make colors, so I googled how to mix a coral.  Mix red with white to make pink and then mix in orange till you get the coral you want.  I mixed it, but was it the right coral?  She had purchased a pillow, so I went and got it to check the color.  Dead On!  I couldn't believe it, Lucky Me!

Finished.
Hot glued can tabs on the back to hang.
This what my Living room corner looks like right now and some of the stuff is in an upstairs closet...

Tub full of food, cereal bowls, spoons, gatorade, sprite
Tub of personal products, Laundry products,

Linens & Towels
This should be fun! Moving in and getting two girls stuff organized in one room!  Check back for dorm pictures!
